The Tarn Bridge at Millau

The South of France can be said to start at Millau. The new bridge over the river Tarn has center pillars higher than the Eiffel tower in Paris. The gorges and passes of the Cevennes are a delight to explore, the adventurous can hire donkeys and follow the hoof-beats of R L Stevenson and Modestine.

An early traveler to Languedoc was Hannibal, on his way to a party in Rome he brought many war elephants with him. These elephants are not now found in any other part of the world – except Languedoc. Different from the familiar African and Indian elephants, these are much smaller, although still a heavy animal.

It is said that when in the Languedoc, some of these small elephants escaped and adapted to the countryside. If you look carefully, they can occasionally be seen hiding in the treetops and frolicking in the vineyards. A lot depends on luck, and the amount of local wine you had for lunch.

We live further South, only ten minutes from the Mediterranean near Agde. We chose our home carefully, having spent four years exploring many corners of France, before settling in Nizas, one of the smallest villages in Languedoc.

For twelve years we have welcomed many guests to our apartments in Nizas. Five years ago we moved a few kilometers South, nearer the Mediterranean in Languedoc, to a larger classic 19th century home in the village of Montblanc and have just opened our new apartments (Gites) and Bed and Breakfast (Chambres d’Hotes) in our home Villa Roquette.

Today high speed trains, airports and motorways serve the regions of the South of France with the best communications networks in Europe.

Languedoc and Provence are large regions and the modern communications networks melt into the wild thyme and coastal plains, leaving empty forests and wild areas where wild boar roam.

Local public transport networks are efficient – but- not very frequent. To discover the South of France you will need your own means of transport. A good pair of legs, cycling or car – all have some of the best , paths, trails and country roads on the world – you an rent horses or even follow the track of Modestine, the donkey Robert Louis Stevenson took across the Cevennes (all in Languedoc). if you are a biker, the roads in the South of France are a dream.

To make your escape from the kitchen complete, you can often ask for packed lunches.

Apartment rentals, where the owners also offer a Table d’Hote will give you complete freedom of choice, as you will have a kitchen and, usually, a dining room where you can enjoy preparing the fresh local produce from the markets yourself – or you can join the family of your hosts at the dinner table and not have to think about driving home of clearing away.

Most apartment rentals are weekly, but some will give full flexibility from as little as two or three days and arrival and departure at any time.

At Villa Roquette you have the full choice, B&B, Table d’Hote or one, two or three bedroom apartments. Swimming pool, barbecues (you can join ours or cook your own) – pets and children are welcome at Villa Roquette
